Julia Rose Dowell
Hi! I’m Julia (she/her). Based in Long Beach, California, on Tongva land. I’m an experienced environmental and climate justice organizer and geographer, by training. I’ve spent the last five years working to combat and mitigate the impacts of climate change in the environmental non-profit space.

My Experience
Geographer | Environmentalist | Environmental Justice Advocate | Educator
Advocating for Environmental and Climate Justice
I began my journey into the environmental field working on environmental justice issues, specifically working with frontline communities to advocate for adequate toxic site remediation in the Bay Area. I have since worked closely with the California Environmental Justice Alliance to advocate for retiring gas plants in EJ communities.
Advocating for Clean Energy
I have deep experience advocating for responsibly-sited clean energy buildout and procurement. I have worked on supporting the buildout of solar, wind, offshore wind, battery storage, rooftop solar and storage, and other distributed energy resources. I have experience advocating for clean energy at the California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission, California Independent Systems Operator, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and more.
Leading Campaigns
I have planned and led various environmental advocacy campaigns at the local and statewide levels. I’ve led campaigns on toxic sites remediation, No Coal In Oakland, preventing harmful algae blooms, water justice, and transitioning to 100% clean energy. I have experience developing comprehensive strategic plans, both internally and with diverse coalitions.
Working with Volunteers
I have worked with diverse volunteer bases across California. I have educated and led volunteers in campaign advocacy to various state and local agencies. I have created opportunities for volunteer leadership and have greatly expanded and diversified volunteer bases.
Teaching Geography
In addition to my advocacy experience, I teach Geography to community college students. I have taught Physical Geography, Cultural Geography, Climate and Environmental Studies. I utilize culturally responsive teaching methods and connect students to real word issues.
Academic Background
I have a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science and Policy and a Master’s in Geography from Cal State Long Beach. My master’s thesis examined how extreme heat due to climate change impacts socioeconomically diverse communities’ differently.
